Salvatore "Sal" Tessio is a fictional character in Mario Puzo's novel "The Godfather" and in its film adaptation directed by Francis Ford Coppola. He is portrayed by actor Abe Vigoda in the film.
Tessio is a longtime member of the Corleone crime family and a trusted associate of Vito Corleone. He serves as the Corleone family's underboss, second-in-command to Vito's successor, Michael Corleone.
In the novel and film, Tessio is portrayed as a shrewd and competent mobster who is loyal to the Corleone family. However, he ultimately betrays Michael by plotting with rival gangster Barzini to have Michael killed.
In the famous scene where Tessio meets his demise, he is led to believe that he is going to a meeting with the rival families but is instead taken away by two of Michael's henchmen and killed.
Tessio's character illustrates the theme of betrayal and loyalty in "The Godfather" saga, showing how even close associates can turn against one another in the dangerous world of organized crime.
